Arthritis is a disease which affects millions of individuals, causing pain and stiffness of the joints. In many instances the joints are read and swollen and are tender to the touch. For many the pain can be a dull aching sensation while others will suffer a sharper pain where the joints have lost most of their cartilage and now bone is grinding against bone. As you can imagine these individuals will do just about anything to stop the pain or at least get some relief, including using some treatments which may be considered strange to some.
There have been many remedies throughout the ages for arthritis some of which may sound worse then the disease itself. For instance there is one treatment which calls for the subject to be covered in fresh heaps of cow manure. Undoubtedly this treatment came about by the fact that heat can oftentimes relieve the pain and swelling associated with the disease. Fresh cow manure would provide a steady source of heat for a considerable amount of time.
Yet another treatment which has been used for many years in home remedy lore is the venom from a bee sting. It has been reported that joints which have been stung by honeybees gain relief from the pain as well as the swelling associated with arthritis. This treatment as you can imagine would be bad enough if used on only one joint, but it would be downright torture if one had to endure stings on all of the joints in the body. There have been scientific studies done on the effects of bee venom and its effect on arthritic joints; however the results have been inconclusive.
One thing that scientific studies have proven is that arthritis sufferers tend to be lacking in certain vitamins. It has also been shown that these individuals are lacking in the B vitamin group most substantially. This point has been argued back and forth by many researchers. Some say that it is the disease which depletes the body of the vitamins, while the other group says that it is the use of aspirin which causes a depletion of the vitamins in the body. So as you can see it is not clear which is the case at this time.
Many individuals who suffer from the disease have been able to use vitamins as a treatment for their arthritis. The vitamins which are used for treatment are the vitamins which fall in the family of antioxidants, which are mostly vitamin C, vitamin E and the beta carotenes. These antioxidant vitamins help to drastically reduce the free radical damage which happens naturally within our bodies, and unnaturally by what we put into our bodies. Those who choose to use vitamins as a treatment also generally tend to use vitamin D to help promote strong bones.
